Summary Smart Document Solutions integrates SwiftConvert
so that SDS customers can automatically view and convert PCL before inputting data into Electronic Medical
Records (EMR) systems.

The Organization
Smart Document Solutions (SDS), a privately held company
based in Alpharetta, Georgia, provides comprehensive health information management solutions. SDS combines
three decades of industry excellence with forward-thinking document management technology to reduce the time, cost,
complexity, and risk in healthcare records processing. SDS helps healthcare organizations reduce administrative
costs, improve staff efficiency, achieve regulatory compliance, increase patient satisfaction and help manage the
revenue cycle - all while complementing existing Electronic Medical Records (EMR) workflow.

The Challenge
Virtually every healthcare organization wrestles with the challenges of managing paper-based health information and
building more efficient, streamlined and secure EMR processing. "For facilities that utilize an EMR system,
fulfilling Release of Information (ROI) requests requires staff to pull and print each record before it can be mailed
to the requestor," says Tim Aligheri, director of development at SDS.
"SDS's integration tool SmartLink alleviates this cumbersome process by capturing electronic records as TIFF, and
with SwiftView's help PCL files, then transmitting them directly to the automated ROI process. By allowing
users to interface SDS's ROI process with the facility's EMR or microfilm system, the costs of paper, toner, copiers,
etc., are eliminated. The entire ROI process is paperless and SDS can even distribute requested documents
directly to the requester in an electronic format (TIFF)."
"Smartlink integrates to all EMR systems in the marketplace," says Aligheri. "Some of these EMR systems have
components that output in PCL format, for example McKesson's Horizon Patient Folder. Also, sometimes departments
create PCL images or records that need to go into the EMR. We needed a way to automatically convert the PCL
output to TIFF; quality and speed were keys to this process. With this business need in mind, I started
researching PCL-to-TIFF converters and narrowed it down to three and then two solutions. I then took sample
PCL files from our customers and processed them using trial versions."

The Solution
"After reviewing carefully, I selected SwiftConvert as the best in quality, speed and price," says Aligheri.
"SwiftConvert exceeded all of our requirements for speed and document accuracy. We have been using SwiftConvert
for customers for over a year now, and it is rolled out to any customer with an EMR package that outputs in
PCL format.
"Our customers process hundreds of pages a day through these processes. Once converted, these TIFF documents
are processed through SDS's internal systems and then either accessed through a portal or printed in our
state-of-the-art print and mail facility."

Results
"What especially attracted me to SwiftConvert was the quality of the TIFF images after conversion," says Aligheri.
"Working with healthcare documents, where there is no room for error, image quality is key. SwiftConvert not
only provides extremely accurate online and print output, but also very fast viewing and conversion. Its ease
of use, installation and integration were also very important to us."
