GTE National Fleet Operations centralized their bill payment operations near Dallas TX, substantially reducing the cost of processing the approximately 10,000 invoices each month for their nationwide fleet of more than 22,000 vehicles. GTE's Sequent based INFORMIX-4GL application is used by 21 Support Assets clerks on Windows 3.1 PCs. Each clerk has an HP ScanJet 3P scanner, SwiftScan, SwiftView and a VT100 terminal emulator application. As the data from each invoice is entered into the database, clerks also scan each invoice and the resulting TIFF files are stored on the Sequent system. The scanning and checking process is under complete control of GTE's INFORMIX-4GL based system, submitting ICS commands to UNIX pipes to control SwiftScan and SwiftView executing at each desk. SwiftServe is used for TCP/IP document access. Scanned invoices are made available during the payment approval process to remote managers and supervisors via fax.
