Summary
A major health insurance company uses SwiftView and SwiftExtract to present online statements to medical providers, and
to reprint parts of million-page print runs.
|
The Company
This insurance company has been providing health care coverage for over 50 years, offering both hospital and physician services
to nearly one million members.
|
The Challenge
The company first wanted quick re-printing from very large [200+ Meg] files. "Customer Service will call us and say,
'Joe Schmoe lost his form - can you reprint it?' and we have to go into the file and find Statements of Remittance (SORs),
Explanations of Benefits on pre-printed forms, and sometimes, paychecks," the project manager explains. "We use proprietary
software to run membership and claims forms for checks and SORs and the software's reprint functionality took an hour
to pull a given document from a 300,000 page file."
Some of their SOR forms also provide the choice of sending electronically or by paper and they started to consider replacing a
system that was supposed to deliver files electronically, but died when it hit one gigabyte. They also wanted to find a
better way to provide timely web access to critical documents.
The company first tried converting PCL to PDF, but found this too slow and very system resource intensive. "Originally we
were using PDF but it just couldn't handle the volume," says the project manager. "Some of our files can grow to a million
pages, and we had memory allocation problems using PDF. 50,000 images would crash the machines. Acrobat would take
30 minutes on a 10,000 page file . . . before the machine blew up! Forget about Acrobat slowing down at 80,000 pages . . .
it wouldn't work well on eight pages!"

The Solution
The company quickly realized that working directly with PCL was the most logical option for the demands of their application.
SwiftView enabled them to view SORs and Explanation of Benefits in 100% accurate PCL, and selectively reprint smaller files
(100,000 pages and under). They added the industrial strength of SwiftExtract to speed up page extraction and reprinting
from 200,000 to million-page files.
WEB DOCUMENT ACCESS
SwiftView was so successful at fast reprinting that the company began to ask how it might bring similar speed and service
to their providers. Through their secure website, the company now lets providers (doctors and hospital personnel) see
all the insurance documents sent out of their system. The thousands of claims that they handle every day are
stored as PCL files in an Oracle database. If a provider needs a document (if they lose the paper version) they
can easily query the website to find the original version and view it online with SwiftView.
SwiftView made practical what at first seemed impossible.

Results
"SwiftView's products are the best out there," says the project manager. "After taking hours to reprint with existing software,
SwiftExtract takes just seconds. Our million-page PCL files need the added horsepower of SwiftExtract
for getting to pages quickly, but even SwiftView by itself can do a fast job on a 100,000 page file, loading it in just two and a half
minutes."
